If you’ve been around here for any amount of time, you’ll already know that we are
big HUGE Disney fans here at Growing Up Greens. You’ve seen what I pack in my Park Bag, read my Top Ten Tips for Planning an Amazing WDW Vacay, and seen plenty of Disney themed lunches over the years.
We’re currently planning an October trip to Disneyland, a first trip for the kids and Lorne & my first DL trip since I was 8. While I love Disney and planning a trip, the reality is that a Disney vacation is definitely not the cheapest vacation you’re ever going to take. There are, of course, ways to cut your costs down, but even if you go the budget route you’re going to need to save up some money for your trip.
To start my savings plan I made this jar (out of a wine jug) and this Mickey Money printable. Whenever I get cash out for something, I always get more than I think we’ll need for whatever we’re doing, and put what’s leftover in the jar as soon as we get back. Anytime we have any change it goes in the jar. Anytime the kids use their allowance money to buy apps/jewels/etc. on the App Store for their iPods, the money goes in the jar.
The wine jug is perfect for a savings jar because it is easy to put money in, but really hard to get money out–basically once it’s in, it’s in there for keeps.
The other part to my savings plan is I have an automatic transfer from my checking account to our savings account of $10, Every. Single. Day. Yep, $70 a week goes straight over to our savings fund. By sending it over $10 a day it feels like less of a sacrifice–it’s all about tricking my mind. To save the $10 a day, I’ve been trying to have as many no spend days as possible. Most days Karter and I stay home, this saves us from popping by Target and spending $200 on basically nothing, it stops us from grabbing lunch out somewhere and dropping $15, and has really helped with my Starbucks habit too. I’ve also been trying to curb my online shopping, as part of my New Years resolutions this year.
So yes, a Disney vacation is pricy, but where would I rather spend my money? On junk that’s just going to gather dust, or on an amazing family vacation that my kids will always remember? I’d rather collect memories than things!

The design is inspired by my favorite souvenir from Disney Parks, Mickey Ear hats! There is five different color options for you to choose from, and when they’re printed out, the size is about 5×5″. You can print them out on regular paper and glue/tape/stick them to your jar, or do what I did and print it directly onto sticker paper.
