Hey friends, hope you’re having a magical holiday season. Can you believe we’re already to Mid-December, and there is only 11 days until Christmas? It’s crazy! How is your gift shopping coming? I’m a super procrastinator when it comes to gift buying, I’ll be the one at the store on Christmas Eve, I just can’t seem to get myself together this time of year.
What I am on top of, rather than gift buying, is Holiday traditions. My most favorite tradition is building and decorating a gingerbread house. It’s something we always did at my house when I was growing up, and I love being able to carry on that tradition with my kids. A couple of years ago we had a gingerbread house decorating party, and since I wasn’t really interested in buying house kits for 7 kids, I taught myself how to make Holiday Houses out of Honey Maid Graham Crackers. I decided to use them again this year, because they’re a perfect no bake option for holiday houses, also they’re delicious.
I picked up our Honey Maid Graham Crackers at my local Walmart, while I was on this weeks grocery run. My store had them in the middle aisle, making them really easy to find!
Since I knew my kiddos would want to eat the houses when they were finished, this year I decided I wanted to make our houses with better for you ingredients, instead of candy, so I picked up a bunch of dried fruit for decorations and brown sugar cinnamon cream cheese for the ‘glue’.
On to the tutorial…
I’m a Texas girl, and as the saying goes–everything’s bigger in Texas, and that rings true for my holiday houses. You’ll need 10 whole sheets of Honey Maid Graham Crackers to make each house. It’s a lot but, it’s worth it–promise.
Start by using a sharp knife to cut two whole crackers from the top corner to the middle line of the cracker horizontally.
Repeat on two more crackers, but in the opposite direction.
For the chimney, cut two quarters of a cracker horizontally about 3/4 down.
Then cut a quarter of a cracker in half.
The last quarter of the sheet should be kept intact.
When you’re finished cutting you should have 4 whole sheets, 4 sheets cut on the diagonal, 1 sheet to build the chimney. Break the last sheet in half longways, you’ll need this for the roof.
You’ll need to connect (with cream cheese) the two sheets you cut on the diagonal to make an ‘a’ frame for the front and back of the house, set aside for a few moments to dry on some parchment paper.
Lay them on their sides so they are short and long, use cream cheese to adhere them to your plate.
Then take the ‘A’ frames you made earlier and add them to your plate using more cream cheese, add some glue to the bottoms to secure to the plate, and at every joint.
Add a whole sheet to the roof, using more cream cheese as glue.
Then take the sheet that you broke in half longways, and add it to complete the roof.
Last you’ll assemble the chimney, diagonal cut quarters will be the front and back, the half quarter cracker will be side nearest the top of the roof, and the intact quarter will be the opposite side.
Your finished Honey Maid House should look like this:
Then comes the fun part–Decorating! We used dried strawberries, kiwi, blueberries, bananas, and yogurt covered raisins for our wholesome house, but the options are endless!
Here’s a little bonus tip for you: hold all your decorations in a divided lunchbox for easy access.
